Program Overview
Approved in 2021, the first-level doctoral program in Statistics offers five research directions: Social and Economic Statistics, Financial Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, Big Data and Food Safety Testing, and Biology and Health Statistics. It focuses on research areas such as financial conditions index measurement, dynamic portfolio construction, optimal investment and financing decisions of enterprises, digital economy analysis, and big data analysis and testing of biological and health characteristics. The program has undertaken and completed multiple national-level projects, including major and key projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, and has also received Jiangxi Provincial Outstanding Achievement Awards in Social Sciences several times. More than 100 papers have been published in top academic journals such as Management Science, Journal of Bank & Finance, Energy Economics, Management World, China Industrial Economics, Journal of Financial Research, Quantitative & Technical Economics, Chinese Journal of Management Science, Statistical Research, and Journal of Applied Statistics and Management. The program aims to cultivate high-level research-oriented talents in statistics with all-round development in morality, intelligence, and physical fitness.
Strengths and Features
1.Diversified Faculty and Integrated Teams: The doctoral program has 17 doctoral supervisors. The discipline brings together faculty with interdisciplinary backgrounds, including statistics, economics, management, mathematics, biology, and medicine, and integrated research teams based on research directions.
2.Multidimensional Research Platforms and Aggregated Databases: The doctoral program is supported by five key research platforms: Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education--Central China Economic and Social Development Research Center of Nanchang University; Jiangxi Collaborative Innovation Center-- Collaborative Innovation Center for Jiangxi's Development and Upgrading to Promote the Construction of the Yangtze River Economic Belt (Nanchang University); Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Jiangxi Provincial Federation of Social Sciences--Jiangxi Regional Economic Development Research Institute; and Jiangxi Social Science Advisory and Decision-Making Research Base--Jiangxi Industrial Research Institute. It also has 6 self-built databases: Yangtze River Economic Belt Data Center, Central China Economic and Social Development Data Center, China Revolutionary Old Areas Data Center, China Green Development Monitoring Data Platform, China Environmental Protection Database, and China Provincial and Municipal Development Database.
3.Integration of Multidimensional Research Directions and Methodologies: The program integrates key research directions such as financial and economic index measurement, dynamic portfolio construction, optimal investment and financing decisions of enterprises, digital economy analysis, and biological and health characteristics analysis, as well as innovative methodologies such as mixed-frequency data models, time-varying models, Bayesian methods, two-stage discriminant analysis, and big data analysis.
4.Interdisciplinary Talent Training: The program explores a new model of cultivating interdisciplinary talents by integrating statistics with economics, management, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, etc., to foster statistics talents with innovative capabilities, interdisciplinary knowledge, and adaptability to the needs of the new era.
