The School of Economics and Management(SEM) of Nanchang University originated from the Economic Thought History Teaching and Research Office of Jiangxi University founded in the 1960s by Professor Hu Jichuang, a leading figure in the history of Chinese economic thought. In 1979, the Department of Economics of Jiangxi University was established. In 1993, the School of Economics and Trade of Jiangxi University merged with the Department of Industrial Management Engineering and the Department of Industrial Foreign Trade of Jiangxi University of Technology to form the discipline clusters in Economics and Management. In 1995, the School of Economics of Nanchang University was officially established. In 1999, it was renamed the School of Economy and Management of Nanchang University, and in 2014, it adopted its current name: the School of Economics & Management of Nanchang University. The School is a pilot unit for the Ministry of Education’s comprehensive “Three-Aspect Education” reform (all-round, whole-process, and all-staff education), as well as a cultivating and establishing unit for the Ministry of Education’s “National Party Building Exemplary Department” program.

The School consists of 5 departments: Department of Economics, Department of Finance, Department of Statistics and Data Science, Department of Business Administration, and Department of Accounting. It currently has 135 full-time faculty members, including 34 professors, 58 associate professors, and 93 holding doctoral degrees.

The School is authorized to confer two first-level doctoral degrees in Theoretical Economics and Statistics, four first-level master's degrees in Theoretical Economics, Applied Economics, Business Administration, and Statistics, and five professional master's degrees in Business Administration (MBA), Finance (MF), Accounting (MPAcc), Industrial Engineering and Management (IE), and Applied Statistics. All five undergraduate programs--Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, and Industrial Engineering--have been selected as National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Sites.

The School adheres to the fundamental principle of "Fostering Virtue through Education" and upholds the spirit of "Serving Society and Benefiting the People". In the process of inheritance and innovation, it continuously pursues excellence and has formed a distinctive disciplinary feature of 'green leadership, red foundation, and golden empowerment.' Looking ahead, the School will seize new opportunities, strengthen Party-led guidance, consolidate disciplinary strengths, strive to build a first-class college and a happy school of economics and management, and work tirelessly to cultivate a new generation capable of shouldering the great task of national rejuvenation.
